"Some vacations start before you book them."

The Story

She was twelve minutes into a forty-five minute video call about Q3 reporting when her fingers found her pendant.

She didn't mean to drift off, but the petrified palm wood in her hand sent her into an involuntary daydream, overriding her better judgement.

Blue sky. White sand. The kind of palm trees that sway like they have nowhere to be. Salt air and the sound of absolutely nothing important happening. A drink with a little umbrella in it. No agenda. No camera on.

"Costa Rica, mmmmmmmmmm!"

"...Sarah, did you want to weigh in on that?"

She blinked. half a dozen faces staring at her from their little rectangles.

"Sorry — yes. Totally agree."

She had no idea what she agreed to.

She minimized the meeting window.

Opened a new tab and typed... flights to Costa Rica.

The Piece

Don't you deserve a tab on your work browser actually want to open? This one might help you get there.

This gemstone stops people.

Not because it's loud. Because it looks like a wood carving — and then you realize it's stone, and your brain has to catch up.

Petrified palm wood has this warm, rich brown that shifts in the light, with grain lines running diagonally like they're still mid-movement. The sculpting follows that energy — flowing ridges that feel like wind through tall grass, or the slow bend of a palm tree in a coastal breeze.

There's nothing stiff about this piece. It feels like something that has been moving for a very long time and finally decided to stop just long enough for you to wear it.

The Making

Petrified wood is humbling to work with.

You're holding something that started as a living tree and became stone over tens of millions of years — and now you're in your studio in Albuquerque deciding what to do with it. There's a responsibility in that.

The grain in this piece does a lot of the work. Those diagonal lines aren't something I put there — they're the actual cellular structure of the original palm, preserved perfectly in silica. My job was to let the sculpting follow that natural movement rather than fight it.

When I finished polishing and the grain caught the light — warm, almost glowing — I thought: this one wants to go somewhere warm. Somewhere with palm trees.

Who can blame it?

The Stone's Story

Around 35 to 40 million years ago, palm trees fell into ancient swamps and riverbeds in what is now Texas and Louisiana — back when that part of North America was warm, humid, and subtropical.

Over millions of years, silica-rich groundwater seeped into the wood cell by cell, gradually replacing the organic material with quartz. The wood didn't rot. It transformed. Every growth fiber, every vascular bundle, every structural detail of the original palm was preserved perfectly in stone.

What you're seeing in those grain lines isn't a pattern. It's a memory. The actual structure of a tree that was alive when modern mammals were just getting started.

Petrified palm wood is so beloved in Texas that it's the official state stone. This piece is from that same ancient coastal world.

Metaphysical

Petrified wood is associated with grounding, patience, and transformation — the kind of calm that comes from knowing you've already survived the hard part. It's considered a stone of ancient wisdom and steady growth.

Also, apparently, spontaneous vacation bookings.
