I remember the day I first reached for the sun.
I stood near a wandering river, the air smelled of rain and moss. I was small then no more than a hopeful sprout pushing through the soil.
Seasons passed, and I grew tall.
Storms flashed across the sky, the rain nourishing my roots adding rings to my trunk each year. My branches stretched further offering shade to dinosaurs small and large.
I stood patient and silent, witnessing a world in motion.
Over the years the river swelled until the ground beneath me softened and gave way. Slowly, with the long sigh of breaking wood, I fell.
Mud gathered around me, pulling me deep into the quiet earth.
The forest moved on.
Long after my roots had forgotten the feel of the soil in my roots soil I transformed into a colorful gemstone.
Millions of years later, I am still here.
Sure, I am no longer standing, no longer in the bed of an ancient river, now I live on, transformed once again by the hands of a modern-day craftsman.

About this Piece
Hand carved and polished by Anthony Garcia in Albuquerque NM. I had a lot of fun carving this colorful stone. Petrified wood forms over millions of years, the living material in the wood is gradually replaced by minerals, most quartz, which is carried by groundwater. Instead of rotting away, the wood’s cells become filled and replaced with minerals, leaving behind a rock that can still shows growth rings, bark patterns, and even microscopic cell structures of the original tree.
The result is essentially a stone replica of wood, often with stunning colors caused by trace minerals.
