"Darkness, when it chooses to protect you, does not whisper. It blinds."
The Story
The king's voice was steady when he gave the order, but his hands were not.
"Find the Stone of Midnight Wind. Bring it back. It's the only thing that can protect the princess from the forces that have possessed her!"
For forty days the knight rode through forests that had no names, fighting anyone or anything that tried to stop him. He crossed rivers that ran the wrong direction. He slept in places where no fire would stay lit. He endured hunger. The cold. The heat. He was wounded, and his whole body hurt
On the forty-first day, the Cave of the Guardian’s came into view.
At the mouth of the cave lie the bones and armor of knights that came before him. As he looked up, he saw it. A two-story high scaled black and torrid greed two headed beast stood before him. As the legends told, he knew the stone lay just behind it. The beast did not speak. Nor did it move. It just watched.
In that moment, a strange instinct came over him, and his fear subsided. He did not draw his sword, instead he set it down in front of him. He placed his shield down beside it.
Then he bowed before the beast in respect and honor.
The beast roared, and the rocks shook.
Then it bowed its heads in return, then shifted itself to the side, allowing the knight to pass.
The knight stood up and began to move — slowly, carefully, deeper into the dark.
He kept walking, trying not to look back.
A flash blinded him for moment.
The darkness…wasn't dark.
There it was, he knew it. The Stone of Midnight. The pitch-black stone was radiating a blinding light.
How can that be?
The Piece
This piece has a mirror polish that does something unexpected — the deeper the black, the more dramatic the light return. Every ridge catches it differently. Move it slightly and the whole thing shifts, like wind moving across still water at midnight.
The contrast between deep reflective black and the warm gold isn't subtle. But subtle wasn’t what I was going for when crafting this piece.
The Making
Jade is a hard stone that doesn't ask to be sculpted. It tolerates it.
I had a specific design and a symmetry that I was going for when sculpting this gem. I had to move very slowly, because if I took too much off one side, it would destroy the balance of the peice. I had to take off a little at a time, meticulously checking.
Jade can be difficult to polish so the moment when I hit that final polish and the light caught it for the first time I laughed. This deep black gemstone just lit up. Not warmly. Not gently.
I have to admit, I am quite proud of this peice.
The Stone's Story
Jade is one of the oldest stones in human history — worn by warriors, buried with emperors, carved into sacred objects for thousands of years across cultures that never knew each other. There's a reason for that.
Black jade gets its color from graphite or iron inclusions woven into the stone during formation — a slow, high-pressure process that happens deep in the earth along ancient subduction zones, where ocean floor is pushed beneath continental crust over millions of years.
The result is a material of unusual density and toughness. Jade is famously difficult to break. Historically, that wasn't just symbolic — it was practical. Warriors actually trusted it.
This piece carries that same quiet authority.
Metaphysical
Black jade is considered one of the most powerful protective stones — believed to deflect negative energy, guard against psychic interference, and create a kind of invisible shield around the wearer.
Both visible and invisible threats. Which is exactly what the knight was looking for.
