The following is a true story.

Late 1970s. The phone rings. Chaka Khan picks up, and on the other end is a voice she knows in her bones.

"This is Sly. I'm down at Electric Ladyland."

That's all she needed to hear. You don't ignore Sly Stone. You grab your coat. You go.

She walks into the studio. Looks around. No Sly. No band. Just one skinny kid sitting there with a guitar across his lap and a quiet little smirk on his face — the kind of smirk that tells you he knows exactly what he just pulled.

"Do you know where Sly is?" she asks.

He looks up. Calm as anything.

"Hi. I'm Prince. I was the one that called you."

She was mad. For about ten seconds. Then she laughed — because honestly, that's a bold move, and you kind of have to respect it.

That moment became a friendship. The friendship became a collaboration. The collaboration became a sound that still echoes today.

Some of the best things in life happen when we're looking for something — or someone — else.

About the Piece

Purple is one of my favorite colors, so when this little gemstone landed in my mailbox, I was already itching to carve it. The rough was on the small side and caked in a layer of white clay. I cleaned it off and was left with this bumpy purple lump that didn't whisper a single design idea to me. Nothing. So I decided to wing it and carve freeform.

I slowed down. I let the stone lead me, instead of the other way around.

There were a couple of moments where I had to make the call — take more off and risk wrecking it, or leave it and trust it. That's always the game. Push too hard, it's ruined. Play it too safe, it never becomes anything beautiful. Either way, the stone ends up in my "bag of shame" with all my other failed pieces that didn't make the cut.

And then I hit that final polish. I watched the light move across the surface… and I just sat there for a second.

It was a paisley. A purple one.

Growing up as a teen in the 80s, Prince was one of my favorites. Still is. So while this piece wasn't inspired by Prince — it's absolutely brimming with Prince vibes.

Remember Purple Rain? His estate, Paisley Park?

Yeah. Sometimes the best things find you.

The Stone’s Story

Purple chalcedony forms when silica-rich water slowly fills cracks and open spaces in ancient rock, leaving behind layer after layer of microscopic quartz over thousands—or sometimes millions—of years. Most varieties form in volcanic rock, where heat, minerals, pressure, and time work together to create that smooth, waxy gemstone texture chalcedony is known for.

Metaphysical Properties

Purple chalcedony is often associated with calm, clarity, and emotional balance. People are drawn to it for its soft, steady energy and the sense of peace it’s believed to encourage. Many also connect it with intuition, creativity, and quiet self-confidence, making it a popular gemstone for reflection, meditation, and slowing down enough to actually hear yourself think.
