"Some days the distance between dimensions gets very small."

It happens on days like this.

When the rain dizzles down and the light goes gray as clouds smother the sky there is a stillness where the world pulls its edges in close.

You're not doing anything. Just sitting. Watching the water flow down the glass.

Goosebumps appear and you shiver.

There is a shift, a glimmer, a glimpse. Subtle as a held breath, and the Veil that separates this moment in time from all the others that have ever happened or will happen disappears.

You're not alone. You're not afraid. You are one.

In a blink the moment passes.

The shiver subsides as you realize that the distance between time and dimensions is smaller than you thought.

The Piece

I've had moments like that.  Maybe you have too.

Celtic tradition holds that certain places are "thin" — where the distance between this world and whatever is beyond it almost disappears. That is what this peice evokes for me.

Like the space between time and eternity, this gemstone seems like  something between solid and liquid, between opaque and transparent. Hold it to the light and it glows softly from inside, like a window with something moving just behind it.

I wanted this piece to be deliberately quiet. Rectangular but not rigid — the sides undulate gently, like a flag in still air, or a page in the middle of turning. The horizontal ridges are subtle. Nothing shouts.

It has the quality of something seen through a veil. Present. Real. And yet, not.

The Making

Translucent stone is a different kind of challenge.

With opaque material, what you see is the surface. With Montana agate, you see into it — which means every mark, every scratch, every decision you make is visible not just on the outside but through the whole piece. There's no hiding anything. The stone keeps an honest record of your skill.

That makes it a little nerve wracking  to work on.

I kept the form minimal — let the material be the statement rather than the sculpting. The undulating edges came from following the natural tension in the stone, the way it wanted to move.

When I finished and held it up to the window on a gray day, the light came through it in a way seemed other worldly to my overactive ADHD imagination.

It looked like a window or a veil into someplace else. Like something between here and there.

The Stone's Story

Montana agate is found along the gravel bars of the Yellowstone River — one of the most prized agates in North America, known for its exceptional translucency and the occasional dendritic inclusions that look like frost patterns or black ink pressed between glass. (Artist's note: I intentionally cut this piece to leave out the natural black inclusions, but I still have plenty of this stone left, and I plan on sculpting a piece or two that lean into those inclusions in the design.)

It forms in ancient volcanic ash deposits, where silica-rich water seeped into cavities over millions of years, building up microscopic layers of chalcedony so fine and uniform that light passes straight through them.

Most agate is opaque. Montana agate is something rarer — a stone that lets you see inside it.

Which feels appropriate.

Metaphysical

Agate is traditionally associated with calm, clarity, and protection — the kind of steady, grounded energy that doesn't make noise but doesn't move either. Montana agate in particular is considered a stone of truth and transparency, of seeing clearly what others miss.

For people who already know that the distance between things is smaller than it looks.
